Azan is a free religion and lifestyle app designed for Android devices.

The app was created for Muslims to easily keep track of their prayer times. It's an app that simply tracks Azan/Adhan. All you need to do is enter your address and zip code, and the app will calculate your corresponding prayer times for each day. The app does this by finding your longitude, latitude, and timezone and then calculating prayer times based on the trajectory of the sun.

The app supports both Sunni and Shia calculation methods. The Azan app is still in beta testing, so it's subject to crashes and bugs. That said, more than five hundred thousand people have downloaded the app. With over five thousand app reviews, there's an average rating of 4.4 stars. The accuracy and the convenience of the calculation can't be ignored.

Also convenient is the app itself. The user interface is intuitive and extremely easy to navigate. The home page will ask you to enter your zip code and your time zone. Once that information is entered, it will ask you to confirm your location. The app will then tell you at what time each of the five prayers should be said.

Permissions required by Azan

  • ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION: Allows an app to access approximate location. Alternatively, you might want ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION.
  • ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION: Allows an app to access precise location. Alternatively, you might want ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION.
  • ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Allows applications to access information about networks.
  • INTERNET: Allows applications to open network sockets.
  • RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: Allows an application to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED that is broadcast after the system finishes booting. If you don't request this permission, you will not receive the broadcast at that time. Though holding this permission does not have any security implications, it can have a negative impact on the user experience by increasing the amount of time it takes the system to start and allowing applications to have themselves running without the user being aware of them. As such, you must explicitly declare your use of this facility to make that visible to the user.
  • WAKE_LOCK: Allows using PowerManager WakeLocks to keep processor from sleeping or screen from dimming.
